With the holidays approaching and Americans needing care and compassion in the midst of a global pandemic, high unemployment and the aftermath of a stressful election, the personal-finance website WalletHub has released its report on 2020’s Most Caring Cities in America, as well as accompanying videos.

In order to identify the most compassionate places in America, WalletHub compared the 100 largest U.S. cities across 39 key metrics. The data set ranges from the share of sheltered homeless persons to volunteering hours per capita to the share of income donated to charity.

Most Caring Cities in America, the top 20, were: Boston, MA ranked number one followed by Madison, WI; New York, NY; Fremont, CA; Virginia Beach, VA; St. Paul, MN; Pittsburgh, PA; Lincoln, NE; Minneapolis, MN; and Chesapeake, VA rounding out the top 10.

Ranking from 11 to 20 were, Seattle, WA at number 11; Jersey City, NJ; Gilbert, AZ; Scottsdale, AZ; Denver, CO; Aurora, CO; San Diego, CA; Chicago, IL; Irvine; CA and number 20 on the list was Portland, OR.

Key Stats

• Memphis, Tennessee, has the highest share of income donated to charity, 5.60 percent, which is 2.4 times higher than in Buffalo, New York, the city with the lowest at 2.30 percent.

• Baltimore has the most volunteer hours per capita, 45.22, which is 5.5 times more than in Jacksonville, Florida, the city with the fewest at 8.20.

• Jacksonville, Florida, has the highest share of residents who do favors for their neighbors, 68.70 percent, which is 1.8 times higher than in Orlando, Florida, the city with the lowest at 38.30 percent.

• Lexington, Kentucky, has the highest share of sheltered homeless persons, 98.60 percent, which is 5.6 times higher than in Fresno, California, the city with the lowest at 17.50 percent.

• Fremont, California, has the lowest child-poverty rate, 2.50 percent, which is 18.5 times lower than in Cleveland, the city with the highest at 46.13 percent.
