Riverbank city officials have announced a couple of special programs for residents, with both a collection effort and a giveaway coming up next month.
First, a Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day will be held in conjunction with Stanislaus County, scheduled for Saturday, April 5. The collection will be hosted at the City Corporation Yard, 2301 High St., from 8 a.m. to noon, or until full. There is a limit of 15 gallons or 125 pounds of waste per person.
They’ve also listed items that will be accepted. They include used oil and oil filters, gasoline and diesel fuel, carburetor cleaner, paint and paint thinner, aerosol products, and all kinds of batteries.
The list also includes pool and spa chemicals, charcoal lighter fluid, antifreeze, road flares, pesticides, herbicides, roof tar, kerosene, fertilizers, car batteries and brake fluid.
No electronics or light bulbs are accepted at these mobile events.
Second, the City of Riverbank has set up a schedule for giving away free compost to residents. The program is in partnership with the city’s organic waste recycler, Gilton Solid Waste. The compost is a product of their curbside organics recycling program.
Officials noted that the giveaway program is a way to give back to the community while meeting regulations required by Senate Bill 1383.
The guidelines include scheduled days for the giveaway, with the compost offered on a first-come, first-served basis. No reservations will be allowed. Residents must bring their own shovel, containers or buckets to load the materials themselves, and self-load their own vehicles, and pick-up trucks must tarp their loads.
Pickups are scheduled at 3134 Sierra St., in downtown Riverbank, on the corner of Sierra and Second streets.
The compost giveaway days are set for Fridays and Saturdays, April 18 and 19, May 16 and 17, June 13 and 14, and July 11 and 12, from 8 a.m. until noon, or until compost runs out.
