On Friday, Feb. 12, just in time for the Presidents’ Day holiday, Cardozo Middle School students crowned a Valentine’s Queen and King. Then they danced the afternoon away.
In the Community Gymnasium on the CMS campus, the student body vote was announced after all 10 royalty candidates were presented, accompanied by family members.
Mariah Joseph was crowned Valentine Queen, while Andrew Palamino received the Valentine King honor.
According to Palamino’s grandmother, Mary Banda, the pair were boyfriend-girlfriend in the seventh grade. But not so now.
After the coronation, the chairs were moved aside, decorations reset, deejay set up and the dance began.
For years called the Sweetheart Dance, for at least the last five or so, the pre-holiday festive event has just been known as the Valentine’s Day Dance.
What better way to begin a three-day holiday weekend; schools were closed for the Presidents’ Day observance on Monday, with classes resuming Tuesday, Feb. 16.
