The following is a listing of some of the local calls for service involving the Modesto Fire Department, which staffs Stations 27, 28, 29 and 30 in Oakdale, Knights Ferry and Valley Home as part of Battalion 5; and the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Department, covering the Riverbank area, as part of Battalion 2.
Calls were logged during the time period of Tuesday, Dec. 31 through Monday, Jan. 6. Days not listed had no reports of significant incidents in this area.
MONDAY, JAN. 6
Battalion 2: Crews completed apparatus and equipment maintenance.
5:43 p.m. – Engine 26, Engine 9 and Battalion 5 were dispatched to the area of Claribel and Litt for an injury accident. Engine 26 reported minor injuries and could handle, all other resources were canceled.
Battalion 5: Station 27 crews along with administrative staff conducted annual vacation and holiday picks for suppression personnel.
6:43 a.m. – Engine 28, Engine 27, Quint 22 and Battalion 5 were dispatched to the area of Elderberry Court and Shadow Creek Avenue for smoke coming from a garage. Upon arrival, Engine 28 reported negative fire on a two-story house; however, a second-floor fire sprinkler activated causing major water damage to the house. Engine 28 secured the water, and all other units were canceled.
11:26 a.m. – Engine 28, Engine 26, Engine 23, Engine 24, Engine 9, Quint 22, Battalions 5 and 2 and FIU were dispatched to the 500 block of Center Street for a working residential structure fire. Battalion 5 reported a single-story duplex with nothing showing, declared investigative mode, and assumed IC. The refrigerator outlet shorted out causing the outlet to smoke. Engine 28 secured the property, and all other companies were canceled.
SUNDAY, JAN. 5
Battalion 2: 11:24 a.m. – Engine 26, Engine 27, Quint 22 and BC5 responded to a report of a potential structure fire in the 2000 block of Patterson Road in Riverbank, with smoke in a laundromat. Crews arrived and located a faulty washing machine motor that overheated. Firefighters isolated the problem and contained it to the washer.
Battalion 5: 10:11 a.m. – Engine 28 and BC5 responded to a subject not breathing in Oakdale. Crews arrived on scene and found a patient in cardiac arrest. Despite all efforts by medical personnel on scene, the patient was declared deceased after 30 minutes of interventions.
SATURDAY, JAN. 4
Battalion 2: Crews focused Saturday drills on hose evolutions and forcible entry.
3:27 p.m. – Engines 9, 21, 23, 24, 28, and Quint 22 responded to a working fire in the 12000 block of Combine Drive. E24 was the first to arrive and reported a small fire in a shed in the backyard that the homeowners extinguished. E23 and Q22 continued to check for extension, the rest of the responding units were canceled. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Battalion 5: Engine 27 and E28 trained on ladders and pumping evolutions at the old K-Mart in Oakdale.
12:53 p.m. – Engine 28, E27 Q22 and BC5 responded to a potential structure fire on Old Stockton Road. A wood burning stove’s flue was blocked and filled the residence with smoke. Crews were able to remove the burning wood and clear the house of smoke.
1:05 p.m. – E28, E27 and BC5 responded to a collision between a truck and a motorcycle on Stearns Road in Oakdale. The motorcycle rider crashed into the truck and was sent through a fence and into a field. He was transported to a local hospital with moderate injuries.
FRIDAY, JAN. 3
Battalion 2: Quint 22 trained on ALS skills, building construction and pre-fire planning at the Fruit Yard restaurant.
Battalion 5: 2:40 a.m. – Engine 28, E27 and BC5 responded to a vehicle accident on Highway 120 and Pioneer Avenue in Oakdale. A big rig collided with a car leaving the big rig completely blocking Highway 120. The driver of the car suffered minor injuries and the truck driver was uninjured. CHP is investigating the crash.
THURSDAY, JAN. 2
Battalion 2: Congratulations to Captain Lunde for completing his ALS 5 call evaluation.
Crews worked on task book signoffs.
8:03 p.m. – Engines 23, 24, Quint 22, and BC2 responded to the 500 block of E Street in Waterford for smoke in the residence. E24 was the first to arrive and could smell smoke but were unable to locate the source. The balance was canceled after they checked the house for any signs of heat. Before leaving, they installed a new working smoke detector.
8:47 p.m. – Engines 3, 21 ,23, 24, 28, Quint 22, BC’s 2, and 5 responded to a residential working fire in the 13000 block of Yosemite Boulevard. E24 was the first to arrive and reported light smoke from a brick single-story barn. After investigation, they located an electrical issue and isolated the problem. The balance of the response was canceled.
Battalion 5: Modesto Engine 29 conducted training on rope rescue systems.
WEDNESDAY, JAN. 1
Battalion 2: Crews completed weekly apparatus checks on the water tenders.
Battalion 5: Crews worked on daily apparatus and equipment checks.
TUESDAY, DEC. 31
Battalion 2: 5:04 p.m. – Engine 24, Engine 23, Engine 28, Engine 21, Engine 9, Quint 22, Medic 1, FIU, BC5, and BC2 responded to a reported working structure fire on Goldmine Avenue in Waterford. Engine 24 arrived and found a small fire in the bathroom exhaust fan that had an extinguisher used on it. The fire was confirmed extinguished, and the situation was placed under control cancelling additional companies.
Battalion 5: Modesto Engine 27 and Engine 28 conducted training focused on hose line stretches.
8:21 a.m. – Engine 28, Engine 27, Quint 22 and BC2 responded to a motor vehicle accident with entrapment. Engine 28 arrived to find two vehicles involved with power lines down. Crews extricated one patient and assisted with patient care. CHP is investigating.
