The following is a listing of some of the local calls for service involving the Modesto Fire Department, which staffs Stations 27, 28, 29 and 30 in Oakdale, Knights Ferry and Valley Home as part of Battalion 5; and the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Department, covering the Riverbank area, as part of Battalion 2.

Calls were logged during the time period of Tuesday, Oct. 15 through Monday, Oct. 21. Days not listed had no reports of significant incidents in this area.

 

MONDAY, OCT. 21

Battalion 2: Crews completed their weekly apparatus checks.

10:54 a.m. – Engine 23, Engine 21, and Quint 22 responded to a vehicle rollover on Highway 132 near Roberts Ferry Road. Oak Valley Ambulance was the first to arrive and advised that everyone was out of the vehicle and had only minor injuries. E24 canceled the other responding units.

Battalion 5: Engine 7 conducted an FMA Training at the reserve power substation on Claribel Road. On site employees gave a tour of the facility and covered the hazards at the facility. Engine 3, Engine 7, Squad 11, Engine 26, Engine 27, BC1, and BC5 attended the training.

 

SUNDAY, OCT. 20

Battalion 5: Crews conducted fire hydrant testing and service in their respective areas.

Crews rotated through quarterly EMS training at Station 22. Training was focused on documentation, airway management and cardiac emergencies. Crews reviewed the latest protocol updates and oversaw a skills session.

5 p.m. – Brush 28, Grass 27, Water Tender 27, Brush 23, WT23, Grass 26 and BC5 responded to a reported vegetation fire in the area of River Road and Rodden Road in Oakdale. Brush 28 was first on scene of a small grass and debris fire. Additional responding units were cancelled.

9:39 p.m. – Engine 9, Engine 11, Engine 21, Engine 23, Engine 26, Quint 22, BC2 and BC5 responded to the 3000 block of Merle Avenue for a working structure fire. Engine 9 arrived on scene with a travel trailer on fire threatening a large shop structure. Initial reports indicated that an occupant might still be inside the trailer. Crews quickly attacked the fire and forced entry into the trailer. The occupant had arrived shortly after from another location and was safe. The fire was contained to the trailer without extension to the shop. FIU at scene investigating.

 

SATURDAY, OCT. 19

Battalion 2: Companies rotated through EMS quarterly training at Station 22.

Stanislaus crews worked throughout the shift to check and clean apparatus and equipment from the prior shifts two vegetation fires.

Battalion 5: Crews completed weekly station maintenance.

Crews rotated through quarterly EMS training. Training focused on documentation, airway management and cardiac emergencies. Medic 1 reviewed the latest protocol updates and oversaw a skills session.

9:56 p.m. – Units responded to a reported vegetation fire in the area of Rice Road and Langworth. E9 was first on scene of a small roadside grass fire. E9 cancelled the additional units and extinguished the fire.

 

FRIDAY, OCT. 18

Chief Wise held a presentation at Modesto Chamber of Commerce to discuss the fire agency and regionalization.

Battalion 2: 11:05 a.m. – Quint 22 was dispatched to a report of a vegetation fire at Finch Road and Codoni Avenue. While enroute Quint 22 upgraded the response. Brush 23, Water Tender 23, Brush 24 and Battalion 2 were dispatched. Upon arrival Quint 22 had approximately five acres on fire. A total of 13 acres were consumed before forward progress was stopped. A total of 13 fire apparatus and 27 firefighters responded to the incident from the MST and the Hughson Fire Protection District.

Battalion 5: 6:04 a.m. – Battalion 5 units responded to a report of a vegetation fire on Highway 108 at Claus Road in Riverbank. BC5 arrived on scene and found a fire on the north side of the Stanislaus River in Escalon. Escalon was notified to respond to the north side to begin firefighting efforts. The fire progressed and jumped the river into Stanislaus County. Crews staging on Highway 108 were able to mitigate the fire. Due to the ember cast landing on roofs of the houses on Highway 108, additional resources responded to provide structure protection. The fire was brought under control in approximately an hour. Crews remained on scene for some time mopping up hot spots.

Truck 5 and Engine 29’s crew configured and mounted tools on Engine 29.

 

THURSDAY, OCT. 17

The training division continued with the engineer’s academy at the Regional Fire Training Center.

Battalion 2: Firefighters Coby Bryant, Niko Lombrana, Dominic Miranda, and Jennifer Saavedra all passed their probationary written tests.

Quint 22 practiced their rope rescue skills.

Fire Chief Kevin Wise introduced Battalion Chief Gerry Laird to the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Protection District Board of Directors.

Battalion 5: Battalion 5 crews conducted a refresher on the operations of the Motorola portable radios identifying all the functions and navigating through the various frequencies, as well as going over the Kenwood mobile radio and its functions on Grass 27.

 

WEDNESDAY, OCT. 16

Crews continue to train on tiller truck sign offs.

Battalion 2: 6:01 p.m. – Engine 26, E7, Truck 5 and BC1 responded to the 2700 block of Santa Fe for reports of smoke coming from a residence. E26 arrived on scene and upgraded the call to a working residential structure fire. E21, E12, E3, BC2 and M1 were dispatched to the scene. Crews were able to quickly locate and isolate the fire to the attic space. Red Cross was requested to assist the occupants. FIU was on scene to conduct an origin and cause investigation.

Battalion 5: 9:30 a.m. – Modesto Engine 7 and BC5 met with County GIS at SR911 for the beginning phases of a Station Map Project for MST Stations.

5:27 p.m. – Modesto Engine 27, Water Rescue 28, Water Rescue 29, and BC5 responded to the 10000 block of Rodden Road for a kayaker that had become stranded on the south bank of the Stanislaus River after flipping their kayak over. The individual was in an area that was inaccessible from the south bank of the river and the river flows were too low for launching the water rescue boats. A rescue swimmer was utilized to swim across the river to the individual and assist them across the river. The individual refused any medical treatment or transport.

 

TUESDAY, OCT. 15

Personnel worked on training and sign offs to operate the tiller trucks.

Executive staff briefed MST on latest updates.

Battalion 5: TDA training was held for new driver operators at the RFTC.

Probationary firefighters continue to study for their 11-month written test this week.
