The following is a listing of some of the local calls for service involving the Modesto Fire Department, which staffs Stations 27, 28, 29 and 30 in Oakdale, Knights Ferry and Valley Home as part of Battalion 5; and the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Department, covering the Riverbank area, as part of Battalion 2.
Calls were logged during the time period of Tuesday, March 11 through Monday, March 17. Days not listed had no reports of significant incidents in this area.
MONDAY, MARCH 17
MST Companies attended a walk-through of the Gallo Spirits Division. The training covered fire suppression systems, facility orientation, and hazards.
Battalion 2: Stanislaus Companies completed Monday apparatus maintenance.
Engine 26, Engine 23, and Quint 22 conducted boat operator training.
Battalion 5: Crews performed Monday apparatus checks and yard maintenance.
Crews performed company level training in their respective FMA’s.
9 a.m. – Engine 26, Engine 27, Quint 22, and Battalion 5 responded to the 7000 block of Eleanor Avenue for a potential structure fire. Engine 26 arrived on scene to nothing showing and residents outside. Upon further investigation by the on-scene crews they located a malfunctioning heating unit. The HVAC was secured, and the remainder of the response was cancelled. All units cleared.
2:30 p.m. – Engine 27, Truck 5. Battalion 2 and Battalion 5 were dispatched to a possible rescue at the Cost Less Foods on Yosemite in Oakdale. While enroute the call was upgraded to a technical rescue response bringing Truck 1 and Rescue 11. Engine 27 arrived on scene and found a roughly 25’ x 25’ section of the roof that collapsed into the building also breaking the fire sprinkler system. Engine 27 secured the water for the sprinkler system and made sure all people were out of the structure. Oak Valley ambulance crews provided patient care for two patients with minor injuries. Oakdale PD helped secure the building to make sure no one else entered the structure. MST Fire companies worked with the building owner to confirm all customers and employees were out of the store and accounted for. Crews also did a secondary search to confirm everyone was out. Once the building was cleared it was turned over to the city building inspector and the store owner. All MST Fire units cleared.
SUNDAY, MARCH 16
MST candidates for the upcoming Battalion Chief’s Testing process conducted training with BC1, BC2, BC3, and BC5 at the RFTC.
Members from the Modesto Fire Explorer Post 911 are attending the California State Fire Explorer Academy in Las Vegas.
Battalion 2: Companies completed daily apparatus and equipment checks.
Battalion 2 personnel participated in Battalion Chief test preparation training.
Engine 23 relocated support equipment to Station 23 so that it could be deployed on large-scale incidents.
Battalion 5: Crews performed apparatus checks and station maintenance.
Crews performed company level training in their respective FMA’s.
Battalion 5 companies participated in fire ground scenarios to help prepare for the upcoming BC promotional exam.
Engine 27 trained with Truck 5 on rescue operations.
7:28 p.m. – Engine 27, Engine 28, Quint 22, and Battalion 5 responded to a potential structure fire in the 100 block of Wood Avenue for an electrical issue. Engine 27 arrived on scene to a two-story apartment complex with nothing showing. Engine 27 was able to isolate the electrical issue and the remainder of the response was cancelled. PG&E was requested to the scene for further assistance.
SATURDAY, MARCH 15
Battalion 2: 10:57 a.m. – Engines 3, 23, 24, Water Rescue 28, Medic 1, BC 2, and 3 responded to an Alert 3 (Aircraft Crash) at Modesto Reservoir just east of Waterford. E24 was the first to arrive and reported a helicopter in the water in the northwest area of the lake. The Stanislaus County Sheriff Marine unit was on the scene and launched their boat with two of our firefighters on board to provide immediate ALS care. The crew rendezvoused with Oak Valley ambulance and the other fire units on the shore. Both patients were treated, one for moderate injuries and the other for minor injuries. One patient was flown to a local trauma center, and the other refused transport. The Sheriff’s office and the NTSB are investigating the crash.

FRIDAY, MARCH 14
MST New hire academy trained at the TFD training grounds on auto extrication.
Battalion 2: The apparatus committee completed the final inspection of the new Type 1 engine built by Hi-Tech EVS of Oakdale. The engine passed with flying colors and will be delivered next week. We will begin installing equipment and training over the next month and a half. This engine will be assigned to Station 21.
Battalion 5: Companies completed daily apparatus checks and station maintenance.
7:14 p.m. – Engine 27, Engine 26, Truck 5 and Battalion 5 responded with OPD units to North Street for a potential structure fire. Crews arrived on scene to find a five-gallon BBQ propane tank on fire under the carport. Firefighters were able to quickly secure the tank, extinguishing the fire before it could damage the home. A faulty connection was found to have started the fire.
THURSDAY, MARCH 13
MST companies and MJC staff assisted with the 39th Stanislaus County Occupational Olympics Career Exposition at the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds in Turlock.
Battalion 2: Engine 26 and Fire Inspector Sansing attended the Occupational Olympics and Career Exposition at the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds.
Stations across Battalion 2 completed Thursday yards maintenance.
Battalion 5: BC5 assisted in the BC Prep class held at Station 22. The class was for prospective Battalion Chief candidates. Employees ran through tactical scenarios and learned about the BC position and the roles and responsibilities of the job.
8:57 p.m. – Engine 7, Engine 5, Engine 3, Engine 11, Engine 26, Truck 5, BC1 and BC5 responded to the 1600 block of Falmoth Way for the report of a motor home on fire threatening the residence. Engine 5 arrived to find a fence on fire (no extension) and Engine 7 remained on scene assisting with overhaul. The balance was canceled.
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 12
Battalion 5: 2:35 p.m. – Engine 28, Engine 12 and BC5 assisted the Escalon Fire Department on a working fire in a two-story motel on Main Street in Escalon. Crews arrived and helped to extinguish a fire that started in a utility room on the first floor of the motel. The fire was quickly contained.
5:34 p.m. – Engine 26, Engine 9 and BC5 responded to a reported motor vehicle accident at Claribel and Terminal with reported entrapment. Crews arrived to find two vehicles involved (negative entrapment) and negative injuries.
TUESDAY, MARCH 11
Battalion 2: Companies completed daily apparatus and equipment checks.
City of Riverbank Councilmember Stacy Call rode along with Engine 26.
Battalion 5: Crews performed apparatus checks and station maintenance.
Crews performed company level training in their respective FMA’s.
Engine 27 and Battalion 5 practiced fire ground scenarios for the upcoming BC promotional exam.
Engine 9, BC3 and BC5 trained on a high-rise exercise to prepare for the upcoming BC test.
3:02 p.m. – Engine 27, Engine 26, Quint 22, and Battalion 5 responded to a potential structure fire in the 500 block of Gilbert Avenue in Oakdale. Engine 27 arrived on scene to a single-story triplex and investigated. Engine 27 did not locate a gas leak and all tests on their monitor came back negative. The remainder of the response was cancelled, and PG&E was requested per the homeowner to check appliances. All units cleared.
5:22 p.m. – Engine 27, Engine 28, Quint 22, and Battalion 5 were dispatched to a potential structure fire in the 2300 block of Semillion Court. Engine 27 arrived on scene to a two-story home with nothing showing and investigated. Engine 27 located a malfunctioning stove with no signs of a gas leak. The remainder of the response was cancelled.
