It was the Riverbank High School girls’ turn to take to the gridiron on the Angelo Novi Stadium last week, clashing class against class in Powder Puff football.

The game for the girls is typically put on as part of the school’s Fall Homecoming Week festivities.

Thursday evening’s game, Sept. 23, pitted the senior/freshmen team against the junior/sophomore squad in two 20-minute halves of flag football.

Almost instantly, in the first series of plays, sophomore Mahalia Guzman caught a pass down the far sideline, taking the ball all the way to the end zone, putting six points on the scoreboard in less than two minutes.

The senior/frosh squad did not score in the first half, leaving the score at 6-0 at the break.

They did pull out a score with about 13 minutes left in the game, with a 20-plus yard pass from quarterback Cheyenne Torrez to Vanessa Rossas. She then ran another 20 yards into the end zone, tying the game.

The next score in the contest came with about six-and-a-half minutes left on the clock. When senior Ainsley Wood dropped back to cover a junior/sophomore pass, she managed to wrangle an interception. Surrounded by a group of teammates blocking for her, Wood ran the 40 yards to the goal line. With no other scores from the opposition, that tallied the 12-6 victory for the seniors and freshmen, just edging out the juniors and sophomores.
