Week brings slight uptick in gas prices

Average gasoline prices in Modesto have risen 1.5 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $4.70/gallon as of Sept. 23, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 201 stations in Modesto. Prices in Modesto are 37.4 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand 70.1 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has declined 2.1 cents in the last week and stands at $3.55 per gallon.

According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Modesto was priced at $3.69/gallon on Sept. 23 while the most expensive was $5.49, a difference of $1.80/gallon. The lowest price in the state was $3.39 while the highest was $6.79, a difference of $3.40/gallon.

The national average price of gasoline has risen 1.2 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.16/gallon as of Sept. 23. The national average is down 18.8 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands 67.4 cents per gallon lower than a year ago, according to GasBuddy data compiled from more than 11 million weekly price reports covering over 150,000 gas stations across the country.

Neighboring areas and their current gas prices include: Stockton - $4.70/gallon, up 5.1 cents from last week’s $4.65; Oakland - $4.92, down 3.6 cents per gallon from $4.96; and San Jose - $4.91/gallon, up 4.2 cents per gallon from last week’s $4.87/gallon.

“With oil prices jumping after the U.S. Federal Reserve cut interest rates by a larger-than-expected half percent, we’ve seen some states where gas prices have inched back up, while others have continued to decline. Most of these increases should be temporary with declines returning in the days and weeks ahead,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “In addition, for California and areas of Nevada and western Arizona, areas that had been left out of the recent drops, refinery issues are improving and gas prices should start moving lower.”

Historical gasoline prices in Modesto and the national average going back 10 years show the highest Modesto price was $5.41 per gallon on Sept. 23, 2023 and the highest national average of $3.83 was also on Sept. 23, 2023. Lowest price in Modesto was $2.62 on Sept. 23, 2016; lowest national average price $2.19 per gallon on Sept. 23, 2020.
