For the second year, the annual Alumni 7-on-7 Soccer Tournament returned to the Riverbank High School practice field over the weekend, with 10 teams contending in the two-day competition.

According to organizer Juan Harvey, who is the varsity boys coach and RHS Athletic Director, the teams were made up of alumni from over the past 20 years.

“Games were contested on adjacent fields throughout the tournament, except for the championship game which had the stage by itself for the many fans who came to watch the game,” he said. “We had some very competitive games with teams composed of alumni from the classes of 1999 to 2022.”

The Friday round started at 5 p.m., with the last round beginning at 7 p.m. that day. On Saturday, play started at 10 a.m., with the championship game beginning at 4 p.m.

“The championship game was contested by the teams Straight Outta Shape and Los Primos,” Harvey said. “Straight Outta Shape came away with the victory for the second year in a row.”

Though rosters and jersey numbers were a little casual through the weekend, Harvey said, the championship winning team, SOS, was composed of alumni from various classes that ranged from 2006 to 2022, including Jesus Yepez, Hugo Yepez, Rigo Garcia, Eric Hernandez, Damian Bolanos, Edgar Ponce, Andy Zamora and Diego Samano.

“We have continued to receive an outpouring of support for how successful this tournament has been and continues to be,” the coach said. “Many alums enjoy seeing friends that they have not seen in many years and compete against each other just like old times. It also allows for the new generation of RHS soccer players to meet those who played before them, as the current high school athletes help staff the tournament.”

The tournament is a fundraiser for the boys soccer team at RHS.

“It will allow for our team to purchase new uniforms next school year, as well as warmups, and pay for team related expenses,” Harvey said.
