Both varsity and JV football teams continued with their winning ways this past week, and flag football was successful, as well. They were among the Bruin teams seeing action, with volleyball finishing up its preseason schedule and preparing for league play.

Bruin Football

The varsity football team has been on the winning side of their most recent preseason games, and that trend continued with their away game at Citrus Heights, against the San Juan Spartans. Riverbank finished on top, 47-0.

A number of Bruin players contributed to the high score. Junior Gabriel Sandoval carried the ball six times, for 84 yards and two touchdowns. Greg Nisperos carried nine times for 76 yards and a touchdown.

Junior Way Reyes carried seven times for 74 yards and two TDs. Alex Melo carried the ball three times for 10 yards and a TD, to round out the scoring.

Riverbank scored six points in the first quarter, 27 in the second, and 14 more in the third.

With a 3-0 preseason record, the Varsity Bruins kick off play in their new league season on Friday, Sept. 20, now in the Mother Lode League, hosting Calaveras High School, the Red Hawks, from San Andreas, at 7 p.m.

The JV game precedes the varsity contest.

Riverbank netters hosted River Islands High School from Lathrop on Tuesday, Sept. 10, with RHS defeating the Riptide, 3-0. On Thursday last week, they traveled to Turlock Christian, finishing on top, 3-0, there, as well. Both were preseason matches.

They’re set to host Summerville on Thursday, Sept. 19 in their first Mother Lode League match.

Lady Bruin Flag Football

Girls Flag Football has had some success in its first-ever season on the field, as witnessed by their 12-6 victory at Ripon on Sept. 11.

Coach Jeff Borden listed the accomplishments of the game: “Awesome job by the Lady Bruins Flag Football team at Ripon High. Naomi Jiminez scored both touchdowns, great QB play by Brianna Guel, and special shout to Coach Guzman and Coach Luna’s defense.”

The coach noted that after the squad gave up a first play touchdown to Ripon, they “locked it down the rest of the game” and also pulled down three interceptions along the way.

It was “a true team effort,” Borden added.

The Lady Bruins were to host Aspire Langston Hughes Academy from Stockton on Sept. 17.

Lady Bruin Golf

The girls linksters of Riverbank High hosted Summerville last week at the Escalon Golf Course. They were to play at Hughson on Monday this week, then at Linden on Sept. 17. They’re set to host Bret Harte’s Lady Bullfrogs from Angels Camp Thursday, Sept. 12 at the golf course in Escalon.

Riverbank runners are getting set for a two-day tournament on Friday and Saturday this weekend, Sept. 20 and 21, at the Woodbridge Invitational, in Irvine.
