On the road this past weekend, the varsity Bruin football team traveled to San Francisco for preseason action. They came back with a massive victory that hopefully sets the tone for their season in a new league. They were just one of the teams in action for Riverbank High School; following is a look at the recent contests.

Bruin Football

Riverbank traveled on Saturday to San Francisco, and played the Pumas of Burton High School.

Formerly the Woodrow Wilson High School, it is named for Phillip and Sala Burton, who each served in the 5th District of the U.S. Congress. Sala was succeeded by Nancy Pelosi in 1987.

Riverbank varsity head coach Joe Pirillo was happy with the 54-0 result of the game, with plenty of stats reported for his team.

“Gabriel Nisperos had 12 carries for 102 yards, one rushing touchdown and a 49-yard punt return TD,” the coach said. “Gabriel Sandoval had seven carries for 105 yards and three rushing TDs. Xavier Lopez had one carry for 27 yards and one rushing TD.”

Also contributing were Alex Melo with two carries for 13 yards and a touchdown, Carlos Durazo had nine carries for 60 yards and a touchdown as well.

“The Bruin offense tallied 360 yards on the ground total,” Pirillo said.

On defense, the coach noted that Melo had four solo tackles, while Kareem Gheith had an interception. Chris Ruiz had a pair of interceptions and one pass break up.

“Nisperos had two solo assists and 1one tackle for loss, also one pass break up. Lopez had three solo tackles and three assists, while Tomas Sandoval netted one solo tackle, two assists, one tackle for loss and a fumble recovery,” Pirillo said.

Other defensive standouts included Sandoval, who tallied five solo tackles and one assist with two tackles for loss. Zeke Contreras had two solo tackles for loss and one assist; Julien Chavarin recorded four solo tackles, two of them for loss.

“The defense held them (Pumas) to one first down that happened on a scramble on the last drive of the game,” Pirillo said of the tough Bruin defensive effort.

Riverbank varsity has a bye this week on Friday, and plays next at home, on Sept. 13, hosting Florin High School from Sacramento County.

Bruin JV Football

There was football on the home field last week, as the JV Bruins hosted Gustine on Thursday, Aug. 29.

Riverbank scored in each of the first three quarters, holding the visiting JV Reds to just one touchdown and a conversion near the end of the game, finishing on top, 26-8.

The JV team also has no game this week.

Lady Bruin Flag Football

RHS flag footballers took the field in the Angelo Novi Stadium on Friday, Aug. 30, hosting Enochs from Modesto in a non-league contest, losing 31-6 in the exhibition game.

They’re scheduled to play at Hilmar on Sept. 4, and then travel to the Lodi Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 7.

Lady Bruin Volleyball

Riverbank girls played their first preseason home match on Monday, Aug. 26. They hosted Delhi, beating the Lady Hawks in four games, 25-20, 27-25, 17-25 and 25-12.

They were to host Modesto High on Sept. 3, and then travel on Sept. 5, to play at Denair.

Also, the golf girls are scheduled to take on Calaveras in San Andreas on Sept. 5 and cross country is to participate in the Central Valley Classic at Woodward Park in Fresno on Friday.
