Three nights of football at Riverbank High last week helped celebrate “Once Upon A Homecoming,” for RHS students and their families. The contests included both some league and non-league action.

Lady Bruin Flag Football

Riverbank’s gridiron girls made history in their first Homecoming Week flag football game with a complete team effort, according to coach Jeff Borden. They defeated Gustine 46-0 in play on Tuesday.

According to Coach Borden, “They combined for 249 passing yards with five touchdown passes, 156 rushing yards with a 30-yard TD run. The defense had five interceptions by five different girls including a 25-yard return for touchdown in the shutout.”

They next play Aspire Langston Hughes Academy in Stockton, with that contest set for Thursday, Oct. 10. The Lady Bruins beat them on their own turf, 14-0, back in September.

Powder Puff Football

Part of Homecoming is the annual Powder Puff football game, pitting the girls of the Senior/Freshman team against the Junior/Sophomore team, with the latter winning by the end of this year’s game, 20-15. The juniors and sophomores won last year as well, 14-6.

A difficulty in reporting game action for the Powder Puff is the lack of rosters kept for both teams, but it looked like the Lady Bruin Flag Football team players were not among those playing Powder Puff.

Bruin Football

Riverbank hosted Gustine in its regular Homecoming Game action last Friday, Oct. 4, winning 17-0. It was 0-0 at the end of the first quarter, then 3-0 at the end of the half, and the same slim lead showed on the scoreboard for the Bruins at the end of the third quarter.

Two touchdowns came in the fourth quarter for Riverbank, junior Gabriel Sandoval scoring the last TD with a long run up the middle to the end zone.

The Bruins play at Big Valley Christian in Modesto on Friday, Oct. 11. They have two more home games before the season ends.

Volleyball Girls

A pair of Mother Lode League matches this past week saw the Lady Bruins get swept by their opponents. On Tuesday, Oct. 1 they fell to Calaveras, 3-0, in scores of 8-25, 11-25, 19-25. Though the squad settled in and played better as the match moved along, they couldn’t find the formula to get past the Red Hawks.

On Thursday, Oct. 3, it was a 3-0 loss to Bret Harte for the varsity volleyball girls. Scores were 16-25, 6-25, 14-25.

They were scheduled to play at Summerville on Tuesday, then return home to host Linden in Thursday, Oct. 10 action.

Lady Bruin Golf

The girl linksters were to travel to Summerville for a match on Tuesday, Oct. 8 and then host Linden at the Escalon Golf Course on Thursday, Oct. 10.

Co-Ed Cross Country

Bruin boys and girls are scheduled to travel to Woodward Park in Fresno to compete in the Clovis Invitational on Friday, Oct. 11.
