Cross country competes, winter sports gear up

Winter sports activities will begin to pick up this week, while the remnant of fall sports still echoes on section cross country courses. Bruin athletes are keeping busy, as they make that transition from fall to winter sports campaigns.

 

Bruin Cross Country

A few Riverbank runners were competing in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division 4 cross country Section meet on Saturday, Nov. 16, hosted at Willow Hills Reservoir Course, in Folsom.

In the girls varsity three-mile race, Riverbank High School junior Giselle Fernandez placed second, with a time of 19:22.8. Senior Jessica Vigil came in 40th, with a time of 22:19.8.

In the boys varsity three-mile race, sophomore Armando Garcia placed 10th with a time of 17:07.3. Junior Gustavo Ortiz came in at 18:08.4, for 33rd place. Junior Victor Bermudez placed 43rd at 18:30, and freshman Erik Guzman finished 71st, at 20:08.6.

In the freshman boys two-mile, Spences Osako came in 31st, running at 14:15.0 while Yael Montesinos placed 33rd, at 14:17.7.

 

Bruin Basketball

Varsity girls basketballers were to be the first to take to the courts, with a 6 p.m. tipoff for the Foundation Game set on Nov. 19, hosting Johansen High School from Modesto.

Varsity boys were to host a Foundation Game as well, also against Johansen, tipping off after the completion of the girls contest on Tuesday.

Boys basketball is to start preseason games on Friday, Nov. 22 at Enochs High School in Modesto, while the Lady Bruins will start Friday at El Capitan High School in Merced.

Boys will travel to Denair on Monday, Nov. 25 and next Tuesday, Nov. 26, will host Central Valley of Ceres for their first home preseason action. The girls will play at home on Saturday, Nov. 23 against McNair from Stockton.

 

Bruin Soccer

Boys kickers were to start scrimmages last Friday, Nov. 15 at Davis High School in Modesto, then at Livingston on Tuesday, Nov. 19. They’re to play in the Hughson Tournament this weekend, then host their first preseason game against Denair on Tuesday, Nov. 26.

The Lady Bruin soccer squad was to scrimmage at Ripon Christian last Friday, Nov. 15 and at Union Mine in El Dorado on Tuesday, Nov 19. They’ll host Sonora this Friday, Nov. 22 and then welcome Denair next Tuesday, Nov. 26 for preseason play.
