Riverbank High School golfers teed off the season with a 10-stroke loss to Ripon Christian on Thursday.
"We played well. It was a close match," said Bruin coach John Bartlett.
Playing on a course strange to them, the Bruin girls returned a score of 227 to RC's 217.
Ashlyn Reed carded a 47 for Riverbank, the lowest score on both teams.
Kendra Gibson hit a 59; Katie Gettling, 60; Laura Coker and Karina Vizcaino, 61; and Megan John, 68.
Twelve girls came out for golf this season, said Bartlett, which is the highest number in several years. But, as usual, there is a dearth of experience.
Only three Bruins, Reed, Coker and Vizcaino, played last year, while Gibson and John are golfing for the first time. Two of the squad are freshmen and three are sophomores.
This week, the Bruins were scheduled to face West on Tuesday at Riverbank's home course in Escalon. They will go against Sierra, away, on Friday.
