It’s that part of the school year where, with finals and graduation just around the corner, Riverbank High athletes find their seasons coming to a close as well.
With that, final home games, and recognition for senior players, began this past week and continues during this one.
Soccer
The varsity girls were the first to honor graduating seniors at their final home game, as the girls soccer season ended at home on Thursday, May 5, against Modesto Christian, a game they lost 6-1. Senior Luz Galvan scored that final goal late in the second half. Next year, both boys and girls soccer will be played during the winter to bring the RHS program more in line with play in other leagues across the state. They lost at Ripon on May 3, by a score of 8-0.
The JV team lost 2-1 at Ripon. JV coach Arturo Albor said, “We had a great run this season and hadn’t tasted defeat since our first game in league. But the amount of hard work, dedication and resiliency our JV team has put forth this season is more impressive than our record. As our season came to a close this very special group of Lady Bruins deserve more credit than I can ever give them. Our program has a bright future ahead of it.”
Softball
The girls were to play their last home game and honor seniors on Friday, hosting Hughson, but the game was rescheduled to Monday because of a conflict with the Prom on May 6.
They clobbered Mountain House on Wednesday, May 4, with a final score of 18-1 on the board. The relatively new high school didn’t even field a team last year. And, to their credit, their one run was knocked out of the park. The Lady Bruins will end their season on the road, at Hilmar, this afternoon.
Baseball
The Bruin varsity team was shut out on Thursday, May 5, with a home loss to the Ripon Indians, 8-0 and were to travel to Modesto Christian yesterday, May 10. They’ll turn right around and host MC tomorrow, honoring RHS seniors on the diamond before the game, closing out their 2016 season.
The JV Bruins lost to Ripon 14-1 at home on May 3 and went down 9-2 at Ripon on May 5.
Tennis
The tennis teams finished their regular season at Hughson on April 26, and played in the TVL tournament in Modesto on April 29 and 30, finishing their season with an undefeated team, and several players qualifying for the Sectional matches.
Because of the size of the teams, RHS golf, tennis and track and field seniors will be honored at the Spring Sports Awards banquet, scheduled for Wednesday, May 18, on campus.
