Riverbank High School winter sports teams are wrapping up their seasons, with final home games for some held last week and others this week.
At the same time, continuing rain in the area and soggy fields were interfering with the beginning of workouts for spring sports teams. Baseball and softball team practice was to get underway last Monday, Feb. 6, but rain forced workouts indoors.
Following is a recap of the winter sports contests for the RHS Bruins over the past week.
SOCCER
On Wednesday, Feb. 8, the Lady Bruins celebrated their final home soccer match with Senior Night recognition prior to the kickoff at Angelo Novi Stadium. Senior players and their families were introduced before the start of the game against Ripon High School.
Unfortunately, RHS soccer fans were disappointed by the outcome, with the girls losing 5-1 to the Lady Indians.
They were to close out their TVL season with games on the road, Monday at Modesto Christian, and Tuesday at Hilmar.
The varsity boys soccer team won’t celebrate its Senior Night game until tonight, Wednesday, Feb. 15 hosting Hilmar, and closing out the league season. They were to play the visiting Modesto Christian Crusaders yesterday, Tuesday, after The News went to press.
Last Wednesday, Feb. 8, the Bruin varsity beat Ripon 1-0 at home, for their only game last week.
BASKETBALL
Lady Bruin basketball played a pair of Trans-Valley League games last week, the first on Thursday, Feb. 9, falling to Ripon, 54-20. On Friday, they hosted Hughson, but the final score was not reported. The girls were to close out their TVL campaign at home yesterday, Feb. 14, against Mountain House.
For boys basketball, the Bruins hosted the Ripon Indians for Senior Night, with the final home game for graduating seniors on Thursday, Feb. 9, in the Ray Fauria Memorial Gymnasium on campus. Despite being one point ahead at the end of the third quarter, Riverbank fell, 83-72, by the final buzzer.
The next night, Riverbank was victorious at Hughson, beating the Huskies 53-38 on Friday. They were to close out their season this week with just a final game on the road, in Mountain House, tonight, Feb. 15.
SPRING SPORTS
With spring workouts occurring as weather permits, Bruin baseball games are scheduled to start on Friday, Feb. 24, hosting Waterford, and softball will take the field for their first game on Monday, Feb. 27, with Davis of Modesto coming to town. Track and Field will travel to Manteca on Tuesday, Feb. 28, for the Sierra meet. Also suiting up for the spring season will be Bruin tennis players and boys golf is a spring sport as well.
