The historic launch of Girls Flag Football began last Monday on the Riverbank High practice field. The pre-season workouts started on Aug. 5, right next to the varsity and JV tackle football teams. This is the first year the school has offered flag football for girls as a competitive sport.

Flag Football

Coach Jeff Borden took to social media last week, inviting a “few good women to make RHS history, as part of the first ever” flag football program. He invited them to “come out and see how fun this fast, non-contact sport is.”

They’ll have to be working fast to prepare, since there is a scrimmage scheduled for Friday, Aug. 16. Counting that, preseason and regular games, the Lady Bruins will be undertaking 19 games in their inaugural season.

Since flag football was announced by the California Interscholastic Federation, some schools in the state have already begun their programs, but the Mother Lode League, of which Riverbank is now a member, chose to start this season.

It should be noted that other states, and other countries, have been playing for a while, and flag football will be an Olympic sport in the Los Angeles games, in 2028.

Bruin Football

Boys football has been working out through the summer, and with classes starting last week, shifted to after school practices. They’ve been playing on the field next to where flag football just started playing on.

Bruin football is scheduled to get in some scrimmage work on Friday, also. Their first preseason game is set for Friday, Aug. 23 against Western Sierra Collegiate Academy in Rocklin.

Co-Ed Cross Country

Workouts have begun for the RHS road racers, with laps around the practice fields the order of the day last week. They face their first league competition at Linden, in San Joaquin County on Sept. 18.

Bruin runners will take on Summerville in a dual meet.

Lady Bruin Golf

Riverbank’s golf girls were to begin practice this week, on Monday, at the nine-hole home course in Escalon. League play is set to start on Thursday, Sept. 5, at Calaveras High School, in San Andreas.

Lady Bruin Volleyball

Riverbank netters have been practicing for a while, with the varsity in the Fauria Gym and the JV squad in the Bruin gym.

Their first Mother Lode League game is on Thursday, Sept. 19 at home against Summerville, the first of 10 league games.
