Matt Elkins is the new head football coach at Riverbank High School this season. He was an assistant for the varsity squad last year.
Elkins is not on staff at Riverbank High and so will be a "walk-on coach," visiting the campus only for practices and games.
Monte Wood, who teaches at RHS and is also a track and field coach, will serve as lead assistant coach in football.
Wood coached the varsity football team last season, but wants more time off this year because he has a new baby at home.
The varsity volleyball team also has a new coach, in the form of Lisa Mill.
A 2000 graduate of RHS, Mila has just graduated in liberal studies from Laverne University in Southern California. She plans on attending Stanislaus State in Turlock to obtain her teaching credentials.
Mila coached junior varsity basketball and frosh volleyball at Glendora High School, in addition to instructing youth basketball and volleyball leagues.
She lives in Waterford. Her mother, Kim Mila, used to teach and coach volleyball at RHS. Her sister, Liz, who once played volleyball for RHS, will help with the coaching.
Lina Quintanar, another RHS graduate, and former volleyball star will again coach the junior varsity squad this year.
Volleyball games are mostly played on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Practice at the school, on other days, will run from 2- to 4 p.m. for varsity and 4- to 6 p.m. for junior varsity squads.
Martin Gonzales, a teacher at Rio Altura Elementary School, will again coach the Bruin soccer team. Gonzales said that potential players have been slow to get their physical check-ups and insurance. He only knew of 10 to 12 boys who have completed these requirements. But he expects to have approximately 20 at practice by school opening on Monday.
In cross-country, RHS math teacher Bruce Edwards will again coach the boys' team, which has a long string of league championships to its credit.
Jeep Oliveira, a real estate salesman and longtime running coach, will again instruct the formidable girls' team.
The Bruin harriers were the first RHS girls' team to reach the State Meet in any sport, Oliveira has noted. They placed third at State in their division last year and expect to finish first this season. The experts rated them as the number two team in Northern California at the last report.
