A combination of scrimmages and preseason games dotted the schedule for the home fields this past week, with flag football and JV football getting the chance to take to the Angelo Novi Stadium. Girls volleyball and varsity football weren’t so lucky, as both teams ended up having some unexpected cancellations.

Here is a wrap of the recent action for the fall sports teams.

Bruin Football

The varsity football boys had been scheduled to play a preseason game last Friday evening, Aug. 23 at home, but the team that was to come had to cancel because they said they couldn’t field enough qualified athletes for a team.

The squad is scheduled to play at Burton High School in San Francisco on Saturday afternoon, Aug. 31.

The JV team was able to get in a preseason game in the evening on Thursday, Aug. 22, at home. They took on Stagg High School’s JV team, from Stockton, just after the Riverbank flag football team hosted a preseason scrimmage in the afternoon.

The JV team is to host Gustine High School at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29.

Lady Bruin Flag Football

Riverbank’s flag football girls were able to play a scrimmage match on their home field last Thursday, hosting the Lady Spartans of Grace Davis High School of Modesto. No official score was kept, but Riverbank scored more touchdowns.

Head coach Jeff Borden reported that his team also competed in the Orestimba Tournament on Saturday, Aug. 24.

“The Lady Bruins went 1-2 in the tournament, notching their first flag football win in school history, 19-13, over Chavez High School,” Borden said.

Brianna Guel threw three touchdown passes, one to her twin sister Arianna and two to Naomi Jimenez.

“On the day she threw a total of 6 TD’s, another to Ari, Summer Mitre and Kelly Jimenez,” said Borden, adding that Kelly Jimenez also ran for two touchdowns during the tournament, including one for 50 yards.

“Standouts on defense were Peyton Shrader, Audrey Ritchey, Madison Bosworth, and Julissa Higuera,” the coach noted. “We learned a lot and are ready to keep growing as we ready for Southern League competition.”

They’re set to compete in the Turlock/Pitman Tournament on Aug. 28.

Their next home game is Friday, Aug. 30 at 5:30 p.m., hosting Enochs from Modesto.

Lady Bruin Volleyball

Girls netters had two scrimmages canceled last week, one for lack of a full team to compete against, the other due to double booking.

They do have a full week scheduled this week, as the varsity and JV were to play Monday, at home against Delhi; frosh, JV and varsity were to travel to play at Waterford on Tuesday. All three levels are also scheduled to be in action at Johansen High in Modesto on Wednesday, Aug. 28.

The JV team is set to compete in the Orestimba Tournament on Saturday, in Newman.

Riverbank’s golf girls and the cross-country team are off this week.
