Riverbank lost to Escalon at tennis on Tuesday in a 4-3 match that came right down to the final mixed doubles.
"The girls doubles (second to last) was disappointing for us," said Bruin coach Bruce Edwards. "We won the first set. Everything was going well. Then we had trouble returning their serve and let them play up the middle."
Riverbank does not feel Escalon is superior at tennis, but has only beaten them once in three years.
"They always seem to just to pull it," said Edwards.
The two teams were equally matched in singles. Riverbank's Javier Contreras lost to Grant Tower 2-6. 2-6, but Matt Santin defeated Dallen Strong at 6-2, 6-3.
Then in girls singles, Bruin Katy Hughes defeated Megan McAid 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, but Rachel Soto lost to Kate Thompson 2-6, 2-6.
In boys doubles, Nathan Lyday and Tyler Burnett won 6-3, 6-2; Vivian Fernandez and Amber Nickles lost the girls doubles, 6-3, 5-7, 1-6. And Justin Jarvis and Cecilia lost the mixed doubles, 1-6, 4-6.
"Javier missed his warmup and did not get into his match," Edwards commented. "Matt took care of his opponent easily, but needed a line judge. Katy had a tough time, but persevered and kept the ball in play."
Escalon's tennis players are all-around athletes who play other sports and it shows, he added. They are more mature and are used to pressure, as was obvious in the girls doubles.
Meanwhile, the half-finished away match against Hughson was again cancelled because of Thursday's rain. Its completion is now reslated for April 8 when Hughson will visit Riverbank.
