Athletes playing spring sports at Riverbank High have been able to fully participate in them since postseason play for basketball and other winter teams have finally receded into history. This past week, they had to get in contests around some late week rainstorms, but stayed busy with multiple contests.
Track & Field
Runners, jumpers and throwers hosted a scrimmage meet against Hilmar on Tuesday last week, the first of the season for the co-ed squad.
In boys running events, Enrique Garnica placed first in the 100-meter dash, with a time of 11.1 seconds. Luke Castro came in fifth and Wayne Reyes tied for sixth. Garnica came in third and Reyes fourth in the 200-meter as well. Erik Guzman placed third in the 400-meter.
Victor Bermudez won the 800-meter at 2:17.0. Junior Matt Santana took first place in the 1600-meter race, at 4:39.0, the only Bruin running out of eight competitors.
Castro came in second in the 300-meter hurdles, and Daniel Orunja placed fourth. Sean Clarke placed second in the high jump.
Riverbank took the top three places in the boys long jump. Adrian Madrigal came in first, with a jump of 16-feet, 11-inches. JuJu Law was second, at 16-feet-8 and Enrique Garnica was third, at 16-feet-4.
Lady Bruin tracksters were led by Maya Guzman with a first place in the 100-meter at 13 seconds. She came in second in the 200-meter race. Jessica Vigil won the 800-meter at 2:31. Gianna Cruz placed third.
In the 4x100-meter relay Riverbank’s A squad came in came in second, while the B squad finished fourth and the C squad ended up fifth. Guzman finished first in the long jump, at 16-feet 1-inch, while Aaliyah White finished third. Guzman also finished first in the triple jump, at 33-feet 6-inches.
Bruin Volleyball
Riverbank traveled to Ripon Christian High School on Wednesday, March 12, falling 6-25, 20-25, and 13-25 to the Knights. They were set to host Escalon on Monday this week, and travel to Orestimba on Wednesday.
Lady Bruin Softball
RHS girls played at Kimball High School in Tracy on Monday, March 10, falling to the Lady Jaguars, 10-2. This week, they’ll play at Big Valley Christian in Modesto on Friday, March 21.
Bruin Baseball
Riverbank was scheduled to host Summerville on March 18, then travel to Big Valley on March 21 for a Friday contest.
Co-Ed Bruin Tennis
RHS hosted Linden on Tuesday, March 11. Coach Bruce Edwards said it was the first time he had seen Linden’s team, since Riverbank is new to the Mother Lode League this year. Riverbank crafted a 6-3 victory. Edwards noted that the visiting Lions were missing their top two girls, so those matches were dominated by Lady Bruins.
Riverbank’s number one boys singles, junior Victor Jacobo, came out victorious.
“He won in a very close match, first set in a tie-breaker 7-5, second set he had broken the Linden player mentally and won 6-1,” Edwards explained. “The Linden player had good mechanics and could hit harder but his decision-making cost him a lot of unforced errors while Victor kept in play and outlasted him.”
In the top boys doubles match, “Felix Pasillas played boys doubles number one with Isaac Cardoso in place of two members being absent,” said Edwards.
They did well, the coach pointed out, considering both are first year players and their rankings were five and eight, respectively, playing Linden’s number three and number four.
“They lost 6-3, 6-0,” Edwards said of Pasillas and Cardoso.
This week, the team was to host Calaveras from San Andreas on March 18, then travel to Angels Camp to take on Bret Harte’s Bullfrogs on March 20.
Bruin Golf
In action this week, the boys were scheduled to play at Linden on March 17 and Bret Harte on March 20.
