Weekend Tournament Benefits Riverbank High Basketball

Out of 16 teams, only one could finish on top of the Riverbank High School Men’s Alumni Basketball Tournament on campus this past weekend. The championship team, officially named RBK Up Top, consists of Kelly Wheelock, Aaron Gentry and Jason Herrera in the back row, left to right. In the front row, from the left, are Ray Baca, Gabe Garcia, Paul Jones, Mike Tinajero, Steve Millanes and Angel Esquivel. Many on the team attended RHS in the ‘90s and early 2000’s. This past weekend saw a flurry of men’s basketball activity on the Riverbank High campus, with the two-day Alumni Tournament, which saw teams made up of former Bruin players.

The annual event raises funds for the varsity basketball program, with the snack bar being staffed by the Boosters group, which also donate funds to RHS teams.

The 16-game single elimination tournament kicked off at 5 p.m. Friday evening, July 15, and concluded about 24 hours later, with games played in both the Bruin Gym and the Ray Fauria Memorial Gymnasium on campus.

Though there were times when a score lead might look as if it were a runaway, many of the games ended up with close scores.

The Championship game found the final score 60-57, with the RBK Up Top team actually on top. And they had a few years on the second-place team, with some of the players alums from the ‘90s era, while their opponents attended in the 2013-15 time period.

And, of course, underlying all the action of the weekend, was the motto “Once a Bruin, Always a Bruin!”

He seems to still have the chops he displayed during his playing days, circa 2013-15. The tournament was held in both the RHS gyms, on Friday and Saturday, July 15 and 16. Ric McGinnis/The News
